Visionary Sight - September 2006
Vision can be described as perception, discernment, and farsightedness.
To enable clear vision naturally you need good eyesight. Since I was a small boy I've always worn glasses, but over the later years have found the need to change from single lenses to bi-focals and now to vari-focals. For those not aware; vari-focals are three lenses in one enabling you to see close up, middle distance and long distance. The benefits to clarity of sight have proved great; by looking through the relevant portion you can see clearly where you are and how to get to your destination, or how to see clearly the work required and be able to see to do it.
I consider we need vari-focal vision in the leading of the church. We need to see clearly the now situation - to be able to meet the needs of the now; to teach, train, and equip. For the next stage, the middle distance, or tomorrow; this is where I see the new building with all its facilities and purposes: the worship centre. As wonderful as that is we must have eyesight beyond that, into the distance; the long vision: to be able to structure to provide the facilities needed for the generations to come. We must leave an inheritance for the future. Much as the provider of the chapel did over a hundred years ago; he invested in the future. We must be able to see further than our own noses to lay hold of the things of God for this time, tomorrow, and after!
Vari-focal leadership works towards these aims in Jesus.
